Abstract

The period of London planning during the Second World War is an appealing era, where in spite of the war disasters, new ideas and aspects of the Modern Movement were tested, legislation and public administration to match the task evolved, laying the foundation for the establishment of the British planning system which dominated and influenced the world for the coming decades. One must stress though that since the paradigm of this period was far from planning ideas and ideologies introduced in later decades including public participation, multi-cultural communities, minorities and gender analysis. Strong criticism has been expressed during the last decades by various writers on the inadequacy of modernist planning (Sandercock 1998).
