In this chapter a multiplicative decomposition of the variation of aggregate energy intensity in the European economy (EU27) will be conducted.

    The exception is the additive AVE-PDM2 method, which produces exact decompositions.

    As mentioned in Chap. 1, this method is regarded as “Laspeyres-based" because values from the initial period are used as weights in Eqs. (3.5)–(3.8).

    The term "simple average" indicates that the same weight (0.5) is assigned to the two extreme periods 0 and T.
