Comprehensive Guide to Neurosurgical Conditions

Abstract

Neurosurgical conditions and emergencies frequently rely on neuroradiology to provide diagnostic information about a patient. The neuroradiology subspecialty provides and interprets CT, MRI, Ultrasound, and X-ray services that provide critical information for patient care and subsequent treatment. In this chapter we will describe the common procedures that are done, why they are ordered and what they are like from a patient perspective.

The major topics included are Plain Radiography (X-ray), CT, and MRI. Each of these techniques is performed in various parts of the body such as the spine or brain to gain information. In some cases CT and MRI may also use a medicine called a contrast agent to better see suspicious areas or to see blood vessels, arteries and veins, and how blood flows through the brain.

In addition, there are specific procedures that are frequently done in neuroradiology which will be described. These include Myelography, Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty.
