Abstract

Many thousands of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers is presently in operation around the world in capacities up to 600 MWe with larger capacity units in making. The price being comparable to those of pulverized coal (PC) boilers, CFB boilers are providing an attractive alternative to utility and process industries especially to developers who have limited access to a consistent supply of good grade fuels. This has resulted in an exponential growth in the sale and use of CFB boilers worldwide. While the use of CFB boiler has grown greatly, its operational reliability has not improved at that rate especially in some parts of the world. Ideally, a CFB boiler is more stable and trouble free than a conventional boiler, but in many places, CFB boiler faces more than its fair share of failure or outage.
