Abstract
Over the past decade, the efficacy of modern chemotherapy, with or without targeted therapy, has been markedly improved. Systemic therapy generates substantial tumour regression in around 50 % of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, median progression-free survival is prolonged to around 9 months, median overall survival approaches 2 years and the chance for resection is increased. The optimal strategy must be decided on by a multidisciplinary team.
