Abstract

It is commonly thought that we have an adequate warning system for earthquake generated tsunami that prevents the loss of life. This chapter describes the Pacific Warning System and other regional ones that are in use today. The flaws in these systems are outlined, specifically for the Chilean Tsunami of 2010 and the Tōhoku Tsunami in Japan (2011). Information on how to survive a tsunami is also outlined with the aim of showing that a proper tsunami culture must be developed for all coastlines vulnerable to tsunami.
