Abstract
The clinical history is critical. While many Sjögrens patients don’t volunteer a history of dry eyes, eye ‘scratchiness or irritation is common. A history of allergies, while not diagnostic, is common, (always ask about septrin allergy). There is often a strong family history of autoimmune disease, especially thyroid (and very especially of the auto-immune condition Hashimoto’s thyroiditis). Some years ago, a European collaborative exercise involving 26 cities in 12 countries to a set of validated criteria for the classification of Sjögrens syndrome (Table 14.1).
