Abstract
Over the past 20 years I have thought long and hard about various aspects of our physical universe. I think I have a reasonable understanding of how structure emerged from the big bang, how our galaxy and solar system formed, how the Sun shines and when it will die, how neutron stars and black holes form. However, the most amazing and dauntingly complex thing that I have come across in our entire universe is the human brain. The brain is a product of countless generations of incremental changes, a road of optimisation that functions in the face of the conditions provided by the Sun and the environment on Earth.
