Abstract
Insurance is protection to cover individuals against some type of loss or risk. Common types of insurance include automobile, home, and business insurance. These insurances provide the consumer with a protection against some type of risk such as an automobile accident or home damage. Health insurance was invented to protect the consumer against health issues or risks because the cost of healthcare prevention, diagnosis, and treatment can be very expensive. Most people are unable to pay for their healthcare needs with their current incomes and need assistance to pay for medical services. The concept of health insurance has been around for 150 years and has evolved into a major part of the healthcare business. Health insurance is available in some manner to all citizens of the United States and can be provided by private insurance companies or federal and state governments. Healthcare insurance can be funded by employers, by state and federal governments, or by individuals. The healthcare insurance system needs to be understood by healthcare professionals to provide quality care for their patients and receive the proper reimbursement for their services. This can involve some type of collaboration between insurance providers, payers, and beneficiaries.
