The Uncemented Concepts: Parameters to Make a Reasoned Choice

  • Chapter
Uncemented Femoral Stems for Revision Surgery

Abstract

Firstly, a surgeon must acquire a perfect knowledge of the objectives imposed by the chosen concept, to select a femoral stem which offers the best compromise. A concept without cement must be well defined, with clear objectives that are easy to achieve during surgery.

The concepts that are “too innovative must be avoided; it is also preferable to avoid the copy of a prosthesis which has already proven its efficiency often for first intention.

Modular implant or mixed concepts must be considered with caution.

Concepts are possible but in limited indications, it is the case for the stems used for primary surgery or stems with distal locking and custom-made stems.

Two concepts are often used and show similarities: the “fit and fill” concept and the “press-fit” concept. We have chosen the “press-fit” concept because with this concept it is possible to avoid a bone/implant contact too extensive.
