Abstract
As dynamically-changing collections of individuals, families can vary across moments, days, and years. Modeling such intra-family variability can offer unique and valuable insights into family functioning that are not available with traditional designs. Chapters by Teachman, Ram and colleagues, and Chow and colleagues offer new and creative ways to model different dimensions of intra-family variability. Yet the research designs necessary to provide such data present significant challenges in terms of time, effort, and resources. In this discussion, I highlight both the benefits and challenges of modeling intra-family variability, using hypothetical models of intra-family sleep as instructive examples.
