Abstract
Three sources of information are used on birth defects: the Medical Birth Register which contains information on practically all deliveries in Sweden including results of paediatric examinations of the newborns, the Register of Congenital Malformations to which infants with serious malformation should be reported, and the Hospital Discharge Register which contains discharge diagnoses from all hospitalizations. All registers have limitations but by adding information from them a reasonable ascertainment of cases is obtained. Thirty-six categories of congenital malformations were selected for analysis, defined from ICD-10 codes.
