Abstract

In this thesis I have described the course of my investigations into the use of higher-order LG modes for precision interferometry. The motivation for using higher-order LG modes in place of the currently used \(\mathrm{{LG}}_{00}\) mode comes from their improved test mass thermal noise performance, as described in Sects. 2.6 and 2.7.
