Computer-Assisted System for Hypertensive Risk Determination through Fundus Image Processing

Abstract

From a fundus image, the system proposed in this paper automatically detects retinal vessels and measures some geometrical properties on them such as diameter and bifurcation angles. Its goal is to establish objective relations between different vessels, thus being able to determine cardiovascular risk or other diseases, as well as to monitor their progression and response to different treatments. The system has been used in a double-blind study where its sensibility, specificity and reproducibility to discriminate between health fundus (without cardiovascular risk) and hypertensive patients has been evaluated in contrast to the expert ophthalmologist opinion obtained through visual inspection of the fundus image. An improvement of almost a 20% has been achieved comparing the system results with the clinical visual classification.
