Im reproduktionsfähigen Alter treten Autoimmunerkrankungen bei Frauen gehäuft auf. Die Schwangerschaft und damit verbundene hormonelle Veränderungen haben unterschiedliche Auswirkungen auf immun-mediierte Erkrankungen. Durch eine Modulation der Balance pro- und antiinflammatorischer Faktoren werden Zell-mediierte Immunmechanismen gehemmt, während humoral vermittelte Mechanismen und die Produktion von Immunglobulinen stimuliert werden (Elenkov et al. 2001, Formby 1995). Dadurch erklärt sich die klinische Beobachtung, dass vorwiegend Zell-mediierte Krankheiten wie z.B. Multiple Sklerose oder Rheumatoide Arthritis während der Schwangerschaft einen benigneren Verlauf zeigen (Confavreux et al. 1998, Kanik und Wilder 2000), wohingegen humoral vermittelte Erkrankungen wie z.B. Systemischer Lupus Erythematodes unter einer Schwangerschaft oft exazerbieren (Mok und Wong 2001).
