Bei der Bewertung des Bedarfes an psychischer Betreuung bei PatientInnen mit chronischen gastroenterologischen Erkrankungen muss neben einer klaren Definition, was unter Bedarf zu verstehen ist, zwischen den einzelnen PatientInnenkollektiven einerseits und unterschiedlichen psychologischen Interventionen andererseits differenziert werden. Daten zum Bedarf nach psychischen Interventionen im gastroenterologischen Bereich unter diesen Gesichtspunkten sind rar. Am besten ist dies bei chronisch entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen untersucht, bei denen 35% der PatientInnen einen Bedarf angeben. Bei PatientInnen mit Zöliakie ist dieser Bedarf mit 27% ähnlich hoch. Der Vergleich zu rheumatoider Arthritis, bei der trotz schlechterer somatischer Lebensqualität der globale Bedarf an psychischen Interventionen nur 16% beträgt, legt nahe, dass die „unsichtbare Behinderung“ durch eine chronische gastroenterologische Erkrankung mit ihren oft beschämenden Symptomen eine besondere, für Außenstehende schwer nachvollziehbare Belastung darstellt, die einer unterstützenden psychologischen Intervention bedarf.
