Über die Gehirn-Darm-Achse (Brain-Gut-Axis) hat der Gastrointestinaltrakt eine besonders enge Verbindung mit unserer Psyche. Dies spiegelt sich auch auf klinischer Ebene wieder, da gastroenterologische und psychische Störungen häufig gemeinsam auftreten. Es besteht daher die Notwendigkeit Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie und Gastroenterologie „zusammenzubringen“. Die Kenntnis und der Umgang mit Psychopharmaka spielt daher im Rahmen gastroenterologischer Störungen für den Kliniker eine wichtige Rolle. Insbesondere werden Antidepressiva in der Therapie funktioneller gastrointestinaler Störungen eingesetzt.
