Zusammenfassung
Die Palmen sind die eigentlichen Holzpflanzen unter den Monokotyledonen. Sie sind meist grosse, unverzweigte, langlebige Bäume, die jedoch zuweilen nach der ersten Blüten- und Fruchttracht absterben (bei endständigem Blütenstand). Die Blätter stehen schopfig gehäuft am Ende der Stämme, sind gross, steif und lederig und meist fiederförmig oder handförmig (fächerförmig) geteilt (nachträglich gespalten). Die Blüten stehen in grossen, meist achselständigen, in der Jugend von einer Scheide (Spatha) umhüllten Blütenständen; sie sind zwittrig oder meist durch Reduktion eingeschlechtig und in den meisten Fällen regelmässig gebaut. Die Blütenformel ist P 3+3, A 6, G 3, doch kommen zahlreiche Ausnahmen vor (z. B. nur 3 oder mehr als 6 Staubblätter; diese zuweilen verwachsen). Die Früchte der Palmen sind Beeren (zum Teil sogenannte Panzerbeeren mit nach abwärts gerichteten ledrigen oder holzigen Schuppen, die aus dem Perikarp entstehen), Steinfrüchte oder Nüsse. Sie enthalten Samen mit gut entwickeltem Endosperm und kleinem Embryo.
