Zusammenfassung

Extrem stark reduzierte, frei schwimmende kleine Wasserpflanzen. Spross thallusartig, nicht in Blatt und Stengel gegliedert. Wurzeln fehlend oder drahtförmig. Blüten zweihäusig, perianthlos; die ♂ auf ein bis zwei Staubblätter reduziert, und die ♀ aus einem einfächerigen Fruchtknoten mit einer bis mehreren Samenanlagen bestehend. Samen mit oder ohne Endosperm. Die Familie besitzt kosmopolitische Verbreitung. Die Lemnaceae sind Süsswasserpflanzen. Einige Arten treten jedoch auch in brackigem Wasser auf (Lemna minor und trisulca).
