Überwiegend Bäume oder Sträucher mit wechselständigen, nebenblattlosen, gefiederten Blättern. Blüten meist zwittrig, klein, in rispigen, traubigen oder doldigen Blütenständen vereinigt. Kelch oft 5zählig, frei oder verwachsenblättrig; Kronblätter in der Regel 5, nicht verwachsen; Staubblätter in gleicher oder doppelter Zahl wie die Kronblätter, die Filamente oft röhrig verwachsen; Fruchtknoten oberständig, meist 4–5fächerig, mit 1–2 Samenanlagen mit 2 Integumen- ten pro Fach. Früchte beeren-, Steinfrucht- oder kapselartig. Samen bei einzelnen Sippen geflügelt; Endosperm vorhanden oder fehlend.
