Zusammenfassung
Kräuter, Sträucher oder Bäume mit wechselständigen, ganzrandigen Blättern. Blüten meist zwittrig, verhältnismässig klein, in reichblütigen Infloreszenzen. Blütenhülle einfach, 4–5zählig. Staubblätter 4,5 oder mehr. Fruchtknoten meistens oberständig, durch 4–12 Fruchtblätter gebildet, die mehr oder weniger miteinander verwachsen sind (Apokarpie und Synkarpie in der Familie); ebensoviele Fächer wie Fruchtblätter, jedes mit einer Samenanlage mit 2 Integumenten. Früchte oft fleischig. Samen mit Perisperm und Endosperm.
