Holzgewächse oder Kräuter mit faserreichen Stengeln, mit wechsel- oder gegenständigen, meist ungeteilten Blättern mit Nebenblättern. Blüten in der Regel eingeschlechtig, mit einfachem, unauffälligem, meist 4- oder 5zähligem, freiem oder verwachsenem Perianth; meist zu vielen in knäueligen oder ähren- oder kätzchenartigen Blütenständen. ♂ Blüten mit meist 4 oder 5 Staubblättern. ♀ Blüten mit oberständigem, einfächerigem Fruchtknoten mit einer Samenanlage mit 2 Integumenten. Nuss- oder Steinfrüchte. Samen mit Endosperm.
