Abstract
Solute concentrations at the groundwater table in sandy soils measured along transects (30 m) were statistically analyzed to separate and quantify deterministic and stochastic variability components. Results for nitrate concentration under arable land and for sulfate concentration under coniferous forest are presented. Spatial variability of these solute concentrations at the groundwater table is influenced by deterministic variability components. These components represent the following extrinsic factors: Fertilization practices on arable land and, under coniferous forest, input into the soil via throughfall of canopy-deposited atmospheric constituents.
