Abstract
This is an introductory chapter which reviews the basic facts of Hamiltonian mechanics used throughout the book. More specific results are formulated in the main chapter as they become necessary. An updated treatment of most of these facts with accurate proofs can be found in the textbooks [Ar 1978], [AM 1978], [GS 1977], and the review papers [We 1977], [AKN 1985], [AG 1985]. For historical information we refer the reader to the fundamental treatise [Wh 1927] and the reviews [Cay 1857], [Cay 1862], [Pr 1935].
