Abstract
These notes grew out of lectures which I gave at a DMV-seminar in Blaubeuren, Bavaria. My main aim is to present a proof of the rank rigidity for manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature and finite volume. Since my interest in the last couple of years has shifted to singular spaces of nonpositive curvature, I take the opportunity to include a short introduction into the theory of these spaces. An appendix on the ergodicity of geodesic flows has been contributed by Misha Brin.
