DNA Methylation and cancer

DNA Methylation

Part of the book series: EXS ((EXS,volume 64))

Abstract

The methylation of cytosine at the 5′ position in the CpG dinucleotide palindrome is the only known epigenetic modification in vertebrate DNA. Although 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) comprises only 1–3% of the bases in the genome, it may play an important role in carcinogenesis through its ability to influence gene expression and increase mutational frequencies in genes involved in carcinogenesis.
