Tumor-stromal cytokine interactions in ovarian neoplasms

Epithelial-Mesenchymal Interactions in Cancer

Part of the book series: Experientia Supplementum ((EXS,volume 74))

Abstract

During the normal monthly ovulatory cycle, the surface epithelium of the ovary undergoes a set of changes which includes (1) epithelial and stromal cell destruction at the site of ovulation, (2) epithelial and stromal cell proliferation and migration into the ruptured follicle, and (3) remodeling and re-epithelialization of the folicular ‘wound’ (Nicosia et al., 1989; Dietl and Marzusch, 1993). These changes in ovarian epithelial and stromal (fibroblast and vascular) structure are accompanied by infiltrates of inflammatory cells (including macrophages, granulocytes, and T-cells) which dispose of cellular debris and secrete a variety of soluble factors which alter the motility, proliferation, and differentiated phenotypes of inflammatory cells, surface epithelium, fibroblasts, and vascular endothelium.
