Abstract

At the first International Symposium on Oxidases and Related Redox Systems (1964, Amherst), George (1965) discussed fundamental aspects of physico-chemical properties of oxygen under the title “The Fitness of Oxygen”. His lecture was presented upon the 50th anniversary of a remarkable book, The Fitness of the Environment, written by Henderson (1913). Based on thermodynamic data of hydrogen-oxygen and oxygen-oxygen bonds, George calculated one-electron reduction potentials for the four-step reduction of oxygen to water via oxygen free radical species (Tab. 1). George concluded that the physical and thermodynamic properties of oxygen are suitable as a terminal oxidant in the energy metabolism of life.
