Summary
The concept of channels and their properties as defined in terms of mechanisms is discussed with respect to the multichannel model for taction. Analysis of neurophysiological results and the establishment of psychophysical-physiological linking hypothesis show how the functional basis of the multichannel model was established. A discussion of how the effects of multimodal interactions, attention and learning affect the information carried by the channels is also included.
