Summary
Pathologic changes of the temporomandibular joint basically represent synovial joint pathology, and it is therefore logical to base the descriptors for disorders of this joint on the nomenclature used for joints elsewhere in the body. In this chapter, basic diagnostic terms and terms used to describe pathologic mechanisms are defined. A systematic approach to arrive at a diagnosis providing a comprehensive basis for treatment is discussed.
