Abstract

Global climate protection is one of the most important challenges for environmental policy which confronts policymakers, industry and society alike. Climate protection can only be effective if the international community cooperates. One country alone will not be able to ward off the greenhouse effect. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which entered into force on 21 March 1994 and which creates an internationally binding basis for global climate protection, was an important step towards such an internationally concerted approach. About 150 countries have now ratified the Convention.
