Abstract

Inspite of the obvious formal difference between wound healing and tumour growth — the former is a normal physiological process while the latter is a pathological one — there are many similarities between them (Dvorak 1986). As tissue repair is a normal response to injury, the growth of solid tumours may be likened to an aberration of successful wound healing — an old concept which has been considerably developed in the past decade (Whalen 1990). Indeed, tumours are often referred to as “wounds that do not heal” (Dvorak 1986).
