Abstract
Human Chang liver cells continuously grown in the presence of 150 to 200 µM zinc synthesize four metallothionein (MT) isoforms differing in their primary structure (Fig. 1). The sequences of three isoforms were identical with the known hepatic forms MT-2, MT-le and MT-11 and correspond to the N-terminally acetylated gene products of the MT-2A, MT-1E and MT-1X gene, respectively [1]. The fourth isoform, designated as MT-1m, differs from MT-11 by the replacement of the conserved glutamic acid residue in position 23 with glutamine and has not yet been observed in human tissues.
