Abstract

A prospective trial was started to evaluate the efficacy of 99m-Tc-tetrofosmin scintigraphy for monitoring the clinical course of thirty-one patients getting neoadjuvant chemotherapy suffering from breast cancer. Clinical and imaging procedures were done at the beginning of treatment and just before surgery. Sensitivity for breast cancer was 69% for mammography, 85% for ultrasound and 96% for 99m-Tc-tetrofosmin scintigraphy. We discovered two cases of bone and two cases of lung metastases by means of 99m-Tc-tetrofosmin scintigraphy. Eight of ten detected suspicious thoracic areas were not confirmed by CT or clinical course.

These findings show that 99m-Tc-tetrofosmin scintigraphy is the most sensitive imaging technique to detect breast cancer. Preliminary data indicate that it might be also become the method of choice for monitoring treatment efficacy.
