Abstract

Advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions have suggested novel methods for quantifying and imaging endothelial cell activation in vivo [1, 2]. Activated endothelial cells express several molecules related to leukocyte recruitment that provide possible targets [3]. Molecular probes to these might be clinically useful for imaging inflammation and provide more readily interpretable information than that supplied by existing techniques [4]. In this chapter we describe our experience evaluating E-selectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) for this purpose.
