Abstract
Diet-induced and cold-induced thermogenesis are impaired when plasma levels of progesterone and oestradiol are increased, respectively. To assess their mode of action on brown fat, we measured the respiration rate of brown adipocytes isolated from rats with high plasma levels of either progesterone or oestradiol. In both cases, we found a poor response to noradrenaline when compared with that of adipocytes from control rats. This effect dissociates brown adipose tissue respiration and thermogenesis from the sympathetic drive in the case of oestradiol. We are currently studying if a similar dissociation also takes place in the presence of progesterone. The consequences of this peculiar effect on brown adipose tissue remain to be elucidated.
