Abstract

Ischemic neuronal cell death induced by transient ischemic attacks, cardiopulmonary arrest followed by resuscitation and acute stroke are leading causes of death and disability in industrialized countries. Early (< 3 h) treatment with tissue plasminogin activator (t-PA) was approved in 1996 for the treatment of acute stroke [1]. Nevertheless, the therapeutic challenge remains to determine what specific pharmacologic or nonpharmagologic interventions can be developed to reduce neuronal cell death and functional abnormalities from strokes or ischemic injury. In this regard, inflammatory processes are thought to participate in neuronal cell death following cerebral ischemia.
