Zusammenfassung
Sträucher, Bäume oder seltener Lianen mit ungeteilten, meist nebenblattlosen, gegenständigen (Amborella wechselständig) Blättern. Blüten zwittrig oder eingeschlechtig (zahlreiche Übergänge), aktinomorph, eher unscheinbar, einzeln oder in rispigen oder traubigen Blütenständen. Blütenhülle meist kaum deutlich in Kelch und Krone differenziert, mit wechselnder Anzahl von Blütenhüllblättern (4 bis viele), die frei oder am Grunde mehr oder weniger verwachsen sind. Staubblätter wenige bis viele, zum Teil von Staminodien begleitet. Fruchtblätter ein bis viele, jedes einen Fruchtknoten, mit einer Samenanlage (bei Austrobaileya viele) mit 1 oder 2 Integumenten, bildend (Apokarpie). Früchte oder Sammelfrüchte verschieden gestaltet: Beeren-, Steinfrucht- oder nussartig. Samen mit Endosperm.
