Summary
We evaluated the role of [99mTc]-hexakis-2-methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (MIBI) SPET in lung cancer staging. 47 patients (mean age 63.3 years) with clinical and radiological suspicion of lung cancer, were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent, among the other staging procedures, CT scan and MIBI SPET of the thorax. In 36 patients a histological diagnosis was made and mediastinal lymph node involvement was demonstrated in 11. Using pathology staging as the standard MIEI SPET showed a sensitivity of 91% and a specificity of 84% while CT scan gave a sensitivity of 73% and a specificity of 60%. The MIBI SPET results were better than those of CT scan also when considering positive and negative predictive values and accuracy.
