Abstract
The editor has kindly asked me to comment from a statistical perspective on the historical article “On prognosis” by William Farr (1838). To place this article in context, I note that it was published about a year after the Registrar-General’s office was established in 1837, and a year before Farr’s appointment to his first official post as Compiler of Abstracts in this office, Farr later assumed the position of Superintendent of the Statistical Department in the Registrar-General’s office, a position he held until his retirement in 1880 (Humphreys, 1885b).
