Summary

Red blood cell (RBC) deformability was assessed by using microfiltration technique and expressed in terms of filtration time of 0.5 ml of 20% erythrocyte suspension. The mean filtration time of diabetic group was 35.5% longer than that of control group. Nicotine (10−5 −10−2 M) produced biphasic alterations in filtration times of both control and diabetic erythrocytes. An initial increase was followed by a slight but significant decrease. The extents of these alterations were concentration-dependent and greater in diabetic group.
