Abstract
Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has a very high thermogenic capacity in response to cold (1) and diet (2). It dissipates energy in the form of heat which is produced via the specific mitochondrial uncoupling protein thermogenin and controls energy balance (1). A reduction in thermogenic function of BAT is highly associated with the development of obesity (3), while an increase in thermogenic function of BAT may have a causal relationship to a catabolic state such as cachexia of cancer or infection. However, the role of BAT in the enhanced catabolism has not been defined clearly.
