Das Musikdenken ist nicht nur musiktopographisch vielfältig, sondern es verlangt auch in der exakten Bestimmung der Klangmerkmale, die diskutiert werden, einen angemessenen formalen Rahmen. Wir haben diesen in 2.5 durch die Begriffsbildung des Aspekts beschrieben. Klangstrukturen werden immer unter Auswahl von Gruppen von Merkmalen innerhalb von geeigneten Räumen physikalischer, mathematischer oder interpretativer Natur untersucht oder geschaffen.
