Abstract

Much of what we know about airways smooth muscle mechanics has resulted from asthma research. It is the increase in the prevalence of asthma [ 1–3] and its increasing morbidity and mortality that has generated the effort to elucidate the changes that develop in antigen-sensitized airways smooth muscle.
