Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is an automated, high-resolution, miniaturized separation technique. CE instrumentation is similar to high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and allows unattended operation with on-column detection and computer-aided data processing. Typically, several hundred thousand theoretical plates per column can be achieved in run times of less than 20 min. The separation is accomplished in fused-silica capillaries of 50–100 µm inner diameter (ID) and 20–50 cm in length. The application of a high electrical field in the order of several hundred V/cm induces a differential migration of charged solutes, making CE an attractive separation tool, especially for biological samples.
