Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Nonselective Cation Channels: A Multifunctional Gene Family

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: EXS ((EXS,volume 66))

Abstract

The light-regulated flow of ions across the plasma membrane of vertebrate rod and cone photoreceptors passes through a nonselective cation channel that is directly gated by guanosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP). It is the purpose of this brief chapter to review the physiological and structural properties of this channel. As will be described below, these channels appear to have structural features in common with some other voltage-gated channels. Whether or not they also show structural relationships to other types of nonselective cation channels, such as those described in other chapters in this volume, remains to be determined.
