Abstract

In the early 1960s our laboratory was engaged in a research program designed to find a superior anthelmintic drug. We wanted it to be chemically unrelated to known drugs, potent, safe, economical, injectable, active against larval stages and active against as wide a variety of worms as possible. Lacking any adequate chemical lead on which to base development of a new drug, we synthesized many new and relatively simple heterocyclic compounds, which we then evaluated for anthelmintic activity against ascarids, heterakids and capillarids in a critical test using naturally infected chickens. For quite some time, however, it looked as if we were climbing trees to seek fish, because the standard oral dose (160 mg/kg) of the 2,721 first compounds thus tested invariably turned out to be ineffective. The next compound however, the aminothiazole derivative I, R6438, turned the tide in our favor: it was capable of removing the three nematode species from the gastrointestinal tract of three chickens.

Our labors are in vain — all the manifold contributions of science, the incessant researches into the complex problems of life, normal or perverted, the profound and far-reaching conclusions of the thinkers and originators — all these are Nehushtan, sounding brass and tinkling cymbals, unless they result in making man better able to fight the battle against disease, better equipped for their ministry of healing.
