Abstract

The role of mass spectrometry as an aid in the identification of chemical compounds has rapidly increased in the past few years, not only in the field of organic chemistry but also in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. This development is well demonstrated by the extensive reviews which have appeared over the last few years on the application of mass spectrometry in the latter branches of science [1–4]. A considerable portion of papers reviewed reports research on compounds of pharmaceutical interest. The search for new drugs may lead to more and more undiscovered territories of chemistry in which the necessary task of structure elucidation of the compounds obtained can hardly be done within a reasonable time without the use of spectroscopic methods.
