Abstract

Cholesterol is a common constituent of tissue cells and body fluids of animal organisms. It is both ingested and synthesized in the body. Since plants do not produce cholesterol, herbivorous animals presumably acquire this sterol entirely by biosynthesis. Only recently some red algae have been shown to contain cholesterol1) but they are not generally consumed as food. Except in the central nervous systems, cholesterol is actively metabolized in parenchymatous and endocrine organs and in integument and muscle. The plasma and tissues of healthy animals maintain certain levels of cholesterol characteristic of the species. The association of high plasma cholesterol with atherosclerosis in man has given rise to numerous laboratory and clinical studies. It seems that the arteries of some individuals are genetically more vulnerable than those of others, for the intima of their blood vessels is easily susceptible to cholesterol deposition. When atherogenesis takes place in the coronary arteries, occlusion (angina and thrombosis) occurs. Also serious is cerebral or renal atherosclerosis with or without diabetes mellitus. Investigators have become encouraged when they successfully produced atherosclerosis in experimental animals by cholesterol feeding.
