Abstract
The high temperature evaporation of YbTe has been followed thermogravimetrically and mass spectrometrically over a large temperature range (1000°C <T< 1900°C), showing that YbTe e-vaporates incongruently. These results are compared with morphological investigations and surface analysis (EDAX) of the evaporated crystal surface as well as with DTA measurements (in sealed W — crucibles) of the T — x phase diagram (400°C<T<2300°C). It is found that Yb-segregation takes place during evaporation.
